Cambridge Feldenkrais Associates

A Cambridge First: The Feldenkrais
Approach Comes To Harvard Square!

Five local practitioners of the Feldenkrais Method  have formed an alliance, Cambridge Feldenkrais Associates, (CFA) for the purpose of creating a greater "Feldenkrais presence" in Harvard Square and practicing their movement education under one roof together. They are located  in Cambridge's premier Yoga center, the newly constructed Karma Yoga Studio at 1120 Massachusetts Avenue in Harvard Square. Karma Yoga is located 4 blocks from the Red Line "T" Station, and across the street from the Inn at Harvard and the #1 Bus stop.  Parking is adjacent to the building, or available on nearby Mount Auburn Street.

CFA inhabits a large professional practice space within Karma Yoga Studio for the practice of 'hands-on' Functional Integration (FI); as well as one-on-one training sessions in Bones for Life® (BFL). Feldenkrais practitioners are licensed by the City of Cambridge Commissioner of Health and Hospitals  as "Movement Educators" and receive up to 800--1000 hours of training over a 3-4 year Training Program and are Certified by the Feldenkrais Guild of North America.  The Feldenkrais approach to learning and movement is applied in many settings; from elementary classroom to Ph.D. programs, rehabilitation, sports clinics, music schools; in Cambridge it has been taught for years at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education, Harvard University Center for Wellness and Health Education, Longy School of Music, Lesley University, Mount Auburn Hospital, Cambridge Health Alliance City Hospital, Cambridge Public Schools, Cambridge Senior Center and many other public and private institutions. This is the first time, however, that so many Feldenkrais teachers are locally gathered under one roof to practice their movement science and art as a group.

CFA will also be offering group classes in Awareness Through Movement, Bones for Life, and Sounder Sleep System™, all of which are taught on a 'drop-in' basis through their Lunch Hour Classes, 12:30-1:30, in one of Karma's warm, uncluttered studios; cost is $15.00 per class.  There is an adjacent Café for a light lunch or a warm cup of tea pre- or post-class or session, as well as showers and a locker room downstairs. Wear warm loose layers of clothing and eat lightly pre-class or one-on-one session.

Please call 617-547-9642 to check on class schedule pre-attendance, or view www.karmayoga.com. You may book an individual Functional Integration lesson with your practitioner directly on-line: www.mybookingcalendar.com/feldenkrais . Cambridge Feldenkrais Associates practitioner/teachers are: Matty Wilkinson, Lauri Weinstein, Josh Schrieber Shalem, John Stevens and Deborah Elizabeth Lotus.  For practitioner/teacher contact and more information  please visit: www.feldenkrais.com , www.bonesforlife.com , and www.soundersleep.com.
lindy Ost New Officer Profile - Lindy Ost, Co-Rep

From 1979-1981 I attended Purdue University as a student in the Athletic Training and Pre-Physical Therapy programs.  I then attended Boston University, graduating in 1983 with a BS in Physical Therapy.  My interest in the Feldenkrais Method developed as a result of attending a workshop in 1990.  I completed a Feldenkrais training with Delman/Questel Associates, and was certified in 1994.

My current practice, Movement Matters, in Brunswick, Maine, serves both children and adults, incorporating both physical therapy evaluations and Feldenkrais lessons.  In 2007 my practice hosted Gretchen Langner teaching Bones For Life® classes and will do so again in January 2008.  In 2005 I initiated a program for bringing Awareness Through Movement into local school classrooms.  (See article.)

As a co-representative to the FGNA, I am most interested in increasing awareness about the Feldenkrais Method and what it has to offer in the larger community.  Sponsoring trainings and advanced trainings for our members, continuing to develop mentoring programs as well as maintaining on-going communication among our members are some of the ways I think we can progress our professionalism and enhance our standing in our communities.

Awareness Through Movement® in the Public Schools
Lindy Ost

In 2005 I initiated a pilot program to introduce Awareness Through Movement in three public school classrooms in my community with the expectation that the new information about their movements would make it easier for students to participate in their classroom activities of sitting, writing, walking and attending to school lessons.  None of the teachers and students had experienced Awareness Through Movement lessons prior to the classes.  This project evolved from a volunteer opportunity within one class to teach Debbie Aston's "Alertness Breaks", to teaching monthly in three classes, two fifth grade classes and one special education class.  I was curious to see if Awareness Through Movement lessons would make it easier for students to learn and for teachers to teach more effectively in their classrooms.

Eight Awareness Through Movement lessons were taught to the two fifth grade classes within their own classrooms. Each class had nineteen students and one teacher. Six Awareness Through Movement lessons were taught to special education class of ten students in their self-contained junior high classroom. Lessons consisted of teaching positions, functions and related vocabulary, and class discussion....

'Structural Improvement using a Pathway System of Functional- Myofascial Lengthening'

Josef DellaGrotte, PhD, RC, CPF, LMT, Director of Core Integration Training Institute, Inc., Adjunct Faculty, Bancroft School of Massage
Arthur Madore, LMT co-presenting

In May 2006, we conducted a clinical study with a small group of participants. The aim of the study was to see how much change and improvement could take place within a given period of time using a well-defined approach based on mapped myofascial movement pathways and principles of Feldenkrais,Awareness Through Movement and  Functional Integration.

Background:
The relationship of posture, the fascia, and idiopathic pain syndromes has been of longstanding interest. Adaptive and compensatory deviations from biomechanical body equilibrium produce both stress and turbulence in the musculoskeletal-myofascial system. Can improvement in postural parameters attended by myofascial lengthening in biomechanical based core pathways of movement transmission affect posture and the reduction of pain?

Methods:

The authors tested and retested a method of myofascial lengthening, Core Integration, principles of Feldenkrais, and Awareness Through Movement, on 16 participants over a period of two months, based on 25 biomechanical parameters, using the ISTAP [Institute of Posturology, Florence, Italy] digital protocol developed by Dr.Ridi and Dr.Bassi.

Using test results, Dr. DellaGrotte assigned specific myofascial pathway exercises for participants in combination with selective manual application by assigned practitioners.  Each participant's facilitator agreed to be available for individual treatment and teaching, as arranged between subject and practitioner, or by request as needed. Each movement lesson-exercise was to be performed on a regular basis: at least once a day from minimum of one minute to 30 minutes.

Results:

Of 20 tested, 16 agreed to follow the protocol. In actuality, only 14 followed the protocol, and when retested, all 14 showed relative individual and group improvement {see the charts], two months later, in postural equilibrium, statistically demonstrated to be "well above the average obtainable by chance alone."

 FROM THE TREASURER:

Dear all my fellow Feldenkrais folks,

I wanted to take this opportunity to explain how our New England regional finances work.  We recieve 10% of our region's membership dues paid to FGNA.  Our 2007 allotment was $2118.50.  This money is held for us by the Guild.  Out of our yearly allowance we must pay for  travel expenses for our representative(s) to attend  two meetings a year of the Council of Regional Representatives (CORR).  Flight expenses are pro-rated via a formula in order to make travel as equitable as possible among regions. After travel expenses, our remaining funds can be used in whatever way the region chooses. As treasurer, I develop a budget which is approved by our members. All expenses are then reimbursed by the Guild up to our annual allotment.  If there is any money remaining unspent from our yearly allotment by the end of the year, it is rolled into the next year's budget.  We can supplement our finances with money we raise ourselves from our own regional meetings, workshops, or from our library fees. You can click on the link below to review our budget.  We have remaining to us in our own regional checking acct. $137.10 and in our library acct. we have $176.40 available for use.

If you have any questions or comments, please let me hear from you.

Thank you,

Gabrielle Wellman
