Class themes for 2011-2012

Fall 2011: SOFT POWER — An in-depth exploration of BREATH

From October through December we'll be exploring our habits of breath:

  • Where can we move when we breathe? the belly, the chest; the front, the back, the sides; the pelvic floor, the diaphragm, the throat....

  • How can we breathe when we move? how movement can support breath,
how breath can support movement, and our own private patterns of interference

  • The timing of breath: the ins and outs and in-betweens
  • The path of the breath: through the face, the palate, the throat, to the lungs

  • The qualities of breath: from restful and restorative to powerful and invigorating!

... all of that in just a few short months...

Winter 2012: BALANCING POSTURE — from positional ideal to a dynamic sense of ease

Many experts, from physical therapists and personal trainers to yoga or tai-chi teachers, claim to know how to achieve ‘good posture’ or ‘proper alignment.’ Though they might all be correct, it is interesting that they don't always agree. Furthermore, many of us experience what we think to be good posture as tiring and uncomfortable, or else frustratingly elusive.

Over the course of this class, as well as the workshops this winter (What is Good Posture? The Answer is Always The Pelvis, and Spiral Power!) we'll be refining a sense of easy uprightness, in which the bones to carry our weight, and our muscles are free to move us.

Spring 2012: THE WORK OF OUR HANDS: engaging the world with skill and power

This theme is particularly important to me, since it was the reason I got into the Feldenkrais Method in the first place.  As an injured string-player, I had to completely re-learn to how to use my hands.  As it turns out, the entire year's lessons lead up to this series. We will be exploring:

  • The spiral flow that connects the hands through the chest to our foundations in pelvis and feet
  • The potential for softness in our hands, in relation to softness in our face, breath, and thoughts
  • Organizing our hand against the floor, as we did both early in our life (as crawling infants), and earlier in our evolution

Each season's workshops will address concepts and movement patterns related to the theme of the weekly classes.

Recent themes (recordings available - just ask!):

Fall 2010 - spring 2011: BABY MOVES
Summer 2011: • Feet and Flow — an exploration of feet, ankles, and walking
                           • Hip Hip!

Feldenkrais for Musicians

The entire 2011-2012 season is optimal for musicians. Just look it over.  But I'd still be more than happy to teach a class geared directly at musicians and their needs. Contact me directly to enquire/express interest- email or call 781-640-8794
